MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 9000 Plus as its newest chipset, arriving as a mid-cycle refresh to its flagship processor, the Dimensity 9000. MediaTek’s Dimensity series is its line of 5G mobile processors that powers several 5G smartphones. The Dimensity 9000 used to be the most powerful chip in the series and a rival to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor.
However, the recent announcement of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor has put Qualcomm ahead. MediaTek, not one to be left behind, has now followed suit with the Dimensity 9000 Plus, and it will slug it out with the new Qualcomm processor as the chipsets of choice for flagship phones that will be launched in the second half of 2022.
The Dimensity 9000 Plus is built on TSMC’s 4nm node, the same as the Dimensity 9000. That’s not the only thing that has remained unchanged. The new chip has 8 CPU cores in the same “1+3+4” arrangement. These cores are also the same as the Dimensity 9000, which are one Cortex-X2 Ultra-Core, three Cortex-A710 Super-Cores, and four Cortex-A510 Efficiency cores. MediaTek has also equipped the Dimensity 9000 Plus with the same Arm Mali-G710 MC10 GPU. What has changed if the CPU and GPU are still the same?
A Performance Boost
MediaTek has increased the clock speed of the CPU. The Cortex-X2 Ultra-Core in the Dimensity 9000 Plus is clocked at 3.2GHz, compared to that of the Dimensity 9000, which is clocked at 3.05GHz. However, it has left the Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.85GHz and the Cortex-A510 cores at 1.85GHz. The increased clock speed of the Ultra-Core translates to a five percent increase in CPU performance. In addition to the CPU, the Mali-G710 GPU has also received a performance boost.
According to MediaTek, it is its “fastest ever Arm Mali-G710 MC10 graphics processor“. Its press release is a bit more specific as it says the GPU performance has increased by more than 10 percent. Working out the math, it means the GPU, which is clocked at 850MHz on the Dimensity 9000, now has a clock speed of at least 935MHz on the Dimensity 9000 Plus. Save for these, other features are the same on the Dimensity 9000 Plus and the Dimensity 9000. The two processors have an Imagiq 790 ISP, which allows for simultaneous video capture from three cameras.
They also feature the same Miravision 790 technology, which brings support for HDR10+ Adaptive technology and support for displays with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz and a WQHD+ resolution. In addition, MediaTek has also equipped the new chipset with the same modem as its predecessor, which only supports sub-6GHz networks, leaving the Dimensity 1050 as the only MediaTek chipset with mmWave 5G support for the foreseeable future. According to the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer, the Dimensity 9000 Plus will appear in phones starting in Q3 2022.
